SUGGESTIONS For Group Consideration
Thursday night Dad and I went to a ukulele workshop hosted by the Tampa Bay Ukulele Society.
The topic was a finger picking beginners’ workshop.
I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to follow along and with practice I think I can actually become competent at this playing style. I thought I was forever destined to be a strummer.
Stuart Fuchs was a great teacher, funny and effective, and eventually wowed us all by showing his talent and technique with a short concert . His classical guitar roots were obvious.
Everyone is invited. Everyone is a beginner so don’t be shy.
This is the list of songs that we ended last spring playing. This is a good starting point for this fall

Zeb hooked me up with the loan of his U-BASS bass ukulele by Kala for the winter.
(I am hoping to buy it from him later assuming he still wants to get rid of it for cash. Maybe at Christmas)
He changed out the original strings with thick black rubber strings. Not sure what brand, but they give it a unique sound and an interesting tactile experience while playing.
Now to learn if there is sheet music for a bass ukulele for the songs I want to play…
Dad lent me this small travel ukulele for the summer, an Applause UAE20-A2 Soprano Uke by the Ovation guitar company.
It is an acoustic-electric, meaning it plays fine and sounds great with no power, but can also hook up to an amp for more sound.
It has a curved back (which was weird at first) and it didn’t have the edges I had gotten used to for holding in place against my body. It forced me to use and rely on the neck strap.
This is what I have been practicing on for the last few months. Great tone (when I hit the strings correctly), but the strings are so darn close together it is a struggle to fit my fingers in without overlapping non-intended strings and frets.
I guess that is what practice is for.
I picked up a beat up old ukulele at a yard sale this week for $5.

It is exactly what I had pictured a ukulele should look like before I started playing, and saw all of the high quality crafted instruments out there. Cheaply made, bad tourist paint job, questionable sound quality.
The only major issue is that it was missing the neck nut (the white piece near the top that hold the strings above the fretboard and apart from each other)
Amazon Prime came to the rescue, and after ordering a replacement nut and saddle set made of bone for $4.95, I waited 6 weeks for the part to arrive.
Once it arrived it was a matter of 5 minutes of repair with Gorilla Glue and I had a fully playable ukulele.

It sounds about as good as you would expect for a $5 uke, but I like it and at least it is decorative.
